Body Imaging & Intervention (SPH)

St. Paul’s Hospital is a tertiary care centre in the heart of downtown Vancouver, servicing a large, wide-ranging population. The hospital has very active clinical departments including a busy Emergency department and ICU. It is the provincial referral centre for heart and kidney transplantation, with leading-edge radiological technology and expertise playing an integral role in the implementation of developing programs and research. The radiology department has three multislice scanners, including two 64-slice CT scanners and a 16-slice scanner. The latest addition to our department is a leading edge technology GE Healthcare Discovery CT750 HD scanner. Two 1.5 Tesla GE magnets are equipped with up-to-date software and two GE advantage workstations are newly updated for post-processing. Fluoroscopy suites, general x-ray rooms and 10 ultrasound rooms are always busy.  

The department has 11 radiologists as well as 5-6 residents each month as part of the University of British Columbia residency program. Each year, three body fellows are accepted into the program. Clinical and basic science research is supported and encouraged. On-call and teaching expectations will be discussed upon application.  

The fellowship includes weekly rotations in diagnostic ultrasound, CT/MRI and Body intervention. A half-day a week is reserved for research time, or to be used to gain further training in an area of specific interest.

Diagnostic ultrasound is a mix of abdominal, vascular, extremity and early/late OB imaging. The ultrasound department services both in and outpatients, with a wide variety of cases on a daily basis.

CT/MRI week involves a wide variety of cases. Approximately 25-35 chest/body CT examinations are performed daily, this would include HRCT chest imaging as well as CT colonography. Body MRI is a growing area at SPH. Currently 15-25 cases are performed weekly, with a mixture of solid organ evaluation as well as gynaecological and hollow viscous imaging, largely for rectal cancer staging and assessment of inflammatory bowel disease. All cases are reviewed with fellowship trained staff radiologists.

Interventional procedures include gastrojejunostomies, nephrostomies, cholecystostomies and biliary procedures (PTC), CT guided lung and abdominal biopses, as well as abscess and pleural fluid drainages.
